Outsiders 1 Response #1

The greasers and socials are very, very, very different. While I was reading in my book, I saw that on page two, paragraph three they didn’t have anything in common. The socials are described as west-side rich kids, and the greasers are said to be east side boys. Then, as I read more to page three paragraph one, I found out that the greasers are extremely poor. They are also wild too. You could probably tell that they are wild by the clothes that they wear. Blue jeans, t-shirts, leather jackets, and boots are a part of their trademark look. Their hair (which is also an important part of their look) is also part of their look, they like to wear it long slicked back with a palm full of grease. While on the other hand, on page five, paragraph two I got a little taste for what the Socials are like. They wear plaid madras shirts and smell like English Leather shaving lotion. They are more of a classier and cleaner type too. So I guess you could say that the two groups are very different. That's probably why they get into so many fights against each other. So those are the differences between the socials and greasers.
Week 1 Response #2
We all know that the fifth commandment is: Thou shall not kill. With that in mind, tell me what you would be feeling AND what you would do now if you were Johnny at the end of Chapter 4.

When I read that Johnny had killed another person I was shocked and stunned! I would have never thought that he would have done something like that. I knew that he was going to carry a knife around just in case if the socs came around again, but I had no clue that he was actually going to use it! I thought it was just going to be to scare the socs away. If I was Johnny, I would go into hiding or just confess and go to jail. I could never see myself doing anything like that, but if I did, I would probably die of being scared. It would not be the right thing to do, I mean go into hiding, but if I did something that major, I think that would be my only choice. Telling the truth and going to jail wouldn't be fun, but I would be the right thing to do, so I guess being a Christin I would choose that. That's what I thought about Chapter four.

I agree! You cannot hide forever. And really, doesn't God know everything no matter where we hide? We can't fool Him, so may as well come clean. ~Mrs. Best

Hey Hanna, Its Alli in case you are wondering- Yeah i agree, the best thing to do would be confess and turn yourself in. I thought that Johnny was shy and he carried a knife with him so he could protect himself against the Soc's since he didnt want to be beat up again. I didn't see that coming either! I thought he was so effected by the other beating that he was kind of going crazy. I agree with what you said and i as a Catholic would definately turn myself in so i wouldn't be lying and i would be honest! like your reading!

WEEK 2! RESPONSE #1 11/17/09
Explain what Ponyboy finds out about Randy and the other Socs at the end of Chapter Seven.

In chapter seven Ponyboy finds out that the Socs are actually regular guys who actually have feelings. Ponyboy was majorly surprised when he found out that Randy and the Socs actually had feelings. This was the first time that someone had opened up to Ponyboy like that, and the person wasn't even in the greaser group! Randy said this something like, "It doesn't do any good fighting, and killing. The greasers will still be greasers and the socs will still be socs, sometimes I think it's the ones in the middle who are the lucky stiffs." Reading that I could really tell that he meant it, and he even started sobbing a little bit. It seemed that Ponyboy and Randy had a good connection and that they understood each other well. I just can't wait to read about what happens next!
They are discovering they are the same. ~Mrs. Best

Hey Hanna. This is Grace. I agree with all of what you said, especially that Randy and Pony had a good connection. I bet Pony was very surprised when Randy opened up to him, and also when he realized how many fragile feelings Randy had. Well, Randy wasn't necessarily fragile, but he did feel sad about his life, and how he just wanted to run away and be free, and get away from all the useless fighting.
I also can't wait to continue reading!
~Grace

Hi Hannah! Its Kelly. I also think that you're right with what you had responded. I agree with Grace too that they had a good connection. I think that Randy might have felt a little overwhelmed too with all of this happening at once. It also said in the book that he was confused and he really didn't know who to talk to about this. I think that I would probably be feeling the same way if any of this had happened to me though. I think a lot of people would! I am really enjoying this book too!

Week 2 Response 2

When we get to know people better, we usually like them more. If that's true, what
could we do if we really don't like someone?

If we really don't like someone there is a bunch of things you could do. If you wanted to become a better friend with that person that you don't like you could work on being more friendly and nice to them. Maybe you could start hanging out with them more at recess or sat next to each other at lunch. If you got to know them better it would help too. Then, you would have something to talk about with them. You could see if you both have anything in common. Maybe you both have a love for music or math, those small things can give you something to talk about even though they seem like little topics. Those are things you can do to become better friends with someone.

Hanna, I think that would be an awesome way to get to know someone and also to make new friends. If I was new and I didn't know you yet, I would feel very welcome.

Hannah I agree with you I think that when you don't like someone you can try to be nice to them. I also think that it's a good idea to try to become a friend with that person. When you said find little things to talk about it gave me an idea that i might try with someone that I don't like.
